Therapy Intensives: What Are They and Are They Right for You?

Remember when popular fast-food chains started their “Super Size Me” marketing campaigns? When ordering a meal, the cashier would ask if you wanted to “super-size” those fries or that drink for a little extra.  In a way, choosing a therapy intensive is like opting for a more focused and impactful option for your mental health needs.

Now, imagine that same concept—but applied to your mental health, healing, and relationship growth.

Traditionally, therapy is packaged into standard 45-to-60-minute weekly sessions. This specific timeframe is largely tied to insurance billing codes rather than what is clinically best for deep, transformative healing. While excellent progress absolutely happens in these hourly increments, the weekly “warm-up” and “cool-down” periods can sometimes slow down your momentum.

Fortunately, there is another way that is rapidly gaining traction in the mental health field: the therapy intensive.

What is a Therapy Intensive?

A therapy intensive essentially takes the traditional hourly model and condenses it into a highly focused, accelerated format. Instead of meeting for one hour a week over the course of three or four months, an intensive combines those 12 to 15 sessions into a partial day, a full day, or even an immersive weekend of deep work.

Because we aren’t constantly stopping and starting, we can bypass surface-level day-to-day distractions and dive straight into the root of long-standing patterns. This format is goal-oriented, deeply focused, and utilizes evidence-based approaches designed for rapid integration, such as the Gottman Method for couples and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for trauma.

In-Person at Wildwood Ranch or Conveniently Online

While these accelerated sessions can be effectively delivered via secure online video anywhere in California or Texas, in-person intensives are highly recommended for the ultimate immersive experience.

If you choose the in-person route, you can experience your intensive in my comfortable, quiet office in Petaluma, Sonoma County, California or at Wildwood Ranch, our dedicated private property located near Coloma, California. Nestled in the beautiful Sierra Foothills and historic Gold Country and Lake Tahoe region of El Dorado County, the ranch provides a peaceful, nature-filled sanctuary specifically designed for deep therapeutic work, workshops, and retreats.

Who is an Intensive Designed For?

I am incredibly excited to offer customized therapy intensives designed to help clients experience months of therapeutic breakthroughs in just a matter of days. This accelerated format is uniquely powerful for a few distinct areas:

1. Couples Navigating High Conflict, Infidelity, or Major Transitions

For couples trapped in volatile communication loops or recovering from a breach of trust, a standard 50-minute session can sometimes feel like just “putting out fires” from the week before. A couples therapy intensive provides a safe, contained space to de-escalate conflict and map out underlying dynamics.

2. Premarital Counseling

Couples moving from dating to engagement and marriage. Investing in this dedicated time early on is a significant marker for higher long-term marital satisfaction.

3. Life Transitions

Couples navigating massive structural shifts, such as starting a family or transitioning into the empty nest phase.

4. Individuals Processing Deep Trauma or PTSD

For individuals working through significant childhood emotional wounds or a recent traumatic event (such as a car accident or witnessing a crime), an EMDR intensive allows the brain and nervous system to process traumatic memories continuously without the disruption of a weekly clock.

5. Time constraints

For individuals, couples or families that have time constraints and scheduling challenges, a day or weekend intensive can be an easier way to schedule multiple people.

Serving Clients Across California & Texas

Whether you want to escape to the foothills or do the work from the comfort of your couch, we have a pathway forward:

  • Northern California Residents: Conveniently accessible for clients throughout Sonoma County (including Petaluma), El Dorado County, the Sierra Foothills, and Gold Country.
  • Texas Residents: As a licensed therapist in the state of Texas, I am proud to offer these intensive services to Texans. You can complete your intensive entirely online, or you can turn your therapy journey into a true wellness getaway by flying out to California to experience your intensive in person at Wildwood Ranch.

Ready to Break Through the Weekly Plateau?

If you find it difficult to accommodate a recurring weekly appointment—or if you are simply ready to jumpstart your healing journey without the wait—an intensive might be the perfect fit.

Let’s bypass the waiting game and get to the heart of what matters. Head over to our therapy intensives page for deeper details on our ranch retreats, or skip the wait entirely and book your free consultation online right now to design your custom session.
