Providing psychotherapy for those who are overwhelmed with life

FAQs

General Questions

Who are your ideal clients?

I specialize in working with thoughtful, mature adults who want to transform and deepen their lives. Many of my clients are creative, spiritually curious, or facing grief, compassion fatigue, or relationship difficulties. Together we’ll navigate these challenges, uncover insights, and help you move toward a life that feels more balanced, purposeful, and aligned with your values.

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?

Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. You already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason aren’t working right now. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them effectively in your current situation.

What’s the difference between talking to you and talking to my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, if you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and interpersonal goals.

Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs

How long will therapy take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Committing to a regular weekly time slot for at least 8 weeks will help you gain the most traction in your growth. Your active participation and dedication is critical to your success. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual counseling or come together?

If you are concerned about your relationship, and you would both like to work with me, I would initially work with both of you together. After this work, if one of you would like to continue in individual sessions, I could work with only one of you. It is not helpful to move from individual into couple’s work with the same therapist because of potential trust issues.

How do I find out if my insurance will reimburse me for therapy?

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask specifically about your out-of-network mental health benefits. Key questions to ask include: Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met? What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed once my deductible is met? Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?

What is a Superbill and how do I use it for insurance reimbursement?

A Superbill is a detailed receipt that includes everything your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim, including your diagnosis code, the service provided, the date of service, and Marty's license and tax identification information.

Here's how the process works: you pay for your session at the time of service, Marty provides a monthly Superbill upon request, and you submit that Superbill to your insurance company. Your insurer then reimburses you directly, typically a percentage of the session fee after your out-of-network deductible has been met.

How does out-of-network reimbursement work?

You pay for your session at the time of service. Marty provides you with a monthly Superbill which you submit to your insurance company. Your insurer then reimburses you directly, typically a percentage of the session fee, after your out-of-network deductible has been met.

Can I use my FSA or HSA for therapy?

In most cases yes. Therapy services are generally considered a qualified medical expense for FSA and HSA purposes. Check with your plan administrator to confirm your specific plan's eligibility requirements.

Why don't you accept insurance directly?

Accepting insurance directly, known as being in-network, requires therapists to accept significantly reduced reimbursement rates, share client diagnosis and treatment information with insurance companies, and limit the length and nature of treatment based on what the insurer will cover. Working as an out-of-network provider allows Marty to keep session fees reasonable, maintain your privacy, and focus entirely on what you actually need rather than what an insurance company will approve.

Do intensives and retreats qualify for insurance reimbursement?

Insurance reimbursement for intensives and retreats varies by plan and is less common than reimbursement for standard sessions. It's worth asking your insurance company specifically about extended session formats. Marty can provide documentation to support your reimbursement request.

What happens if I need to cancel a session?

Please cancel at least 48 hours, or two full business days, in advance. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will be charged the full session rate. If you have an unexpected emergency, please reach out directly to discuss your situation.

Is the initial consultation free?

Yes. The first step is always a brief, no-cost phone consultation to talk through what you're looking for and whether working together is the right fit. There is no charge and no commitment required for this call.

Still Have Questions?

If you didn’t find what you were looking for here, the free consultation is the best place to get your questions answered directly.

There’s no pressure and no commitment required. Just an honest conversation about where you are and whether working with Marty might be the right fit.
