Thinking about the cost of therapy is a real and practical consideration, and Marty wants you to have all the information you need to make the right decision for yourself.

Below you’ll find everything you need to know about fees, insurance, payment options, and how to make the most of your benefits.

Therapy Session Rates

Fees are based on the usual and customary rates for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Individual Therapy — $195 per 50-minute session

Couples Therapy — $245 per 50-minute session

Payment is due at the time of your session.

Therapy Intensive Rates

For those looking for concentrated therapeutic work in a shorter period of time, intensives are offered as structured program pricing rather than hourly billing.

Insurance

New Roads Counseling is an out-of-network provider for most PPO insurance plans.

Many PPO plans offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network therapy services, which means you may be able to recover a meaningful portion of your session costs. The best first step is to contact your insurance company directly and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits before your first session.

If you would like to seek reimbursement, Marty is happy to provide a monthly Superbill, which includes all the information your insurance company typically requires to process an out-of-network claim.

Please note that HMO plans generally do not offer out-of-network benefits. If you have an HMO, it’s worth contacting your plan to confirm your specific coverage.

FSA and HSA Payment

You may be able to use Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds to pay for therapy services, as counseling is generally considered a qualified medical expense. Check with your FSA or HSA plan administrator to confirm eligibility.

Payment Methods

Marty accepts all major credit cards, PayPal, Zelle, and Venmo.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, please do so at least 48 hours, or two full business days, in advance. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before your scheduled session will be charged the full session rate.

How do I find out if my insurance will reimburse me for therapy?

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask specifically about your out-of-network mental health benefits. Key questions to ask include: Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met? What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed once my deductible is met? Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?

What is a Superbill and how do I use it for insurance reimbursement?

A Superbill is a detailed receipt that includes everything your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network reimbursement claim, including your diagnosis code, the service provided, the date of service, and Marty's license and tax identification information.

Here's how the process works: you pay for your session at the time of service, Marty provides a monthly Superbill upon request, and you submit that Superbill to your insurance company. Your insurer then reimburses you directly, typically a percentage of the session fee after your out-of-network deductible has been met.

How does out-of-network reimbursement work?

You pay for your session at the time of service. Marty provides you with a monthly Superbill which you submit to your insurance company. Your insurer then reimburses you directly, typically a percentage of the session fee, after your out-of-network deductible has been met.

Can I use my FSA or HSA for therapy?

In most cases yes. Therapy services are generally considered a qualified medical expense for FSA and HSA purposes. Check with your plan administrator to confirm your specific plan's eligibility requirements.

Why don't you accept insurance directly?

Accepting insurance directly, known as being in-network, requires therapists to accept significantly reduced reimbursement rates, share client diagnosis and treatment information with insurance companies, and limit the length and nature of treatment based on what the insurer will cover. Working as an out-of-network provider allows Marty to keep session fees reasonable, maintain your privacy, and focus entirely on what you actually need rather than what an insurance company will approve.

Do intensives and retreats qualify for insurance reimbursement?

Insurance reimbursement for intensives and retreats varies by plan and is less common than reimbursement for standard sessions. It's worth asking your insurance company specifically about extended session formats. Marty can provide documentation to support your reimbursement request.

What happens if I need to cancel a session?

Please cancel at least 48 hours, or two full business days, in advance. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will be charged the full session rate. If you have an unexpected emergency, please reach out directly to discuss your situation.

Is the initial consultation free?

Yes. The first step is always a brief, no-cost phone consultation to talk through what you're looking for and whether working together is the right fit. There is no charge and no commitment required for this call.
