For those of you who didn’t know, I spent my entire twenties pursuing a life in opera and musical theater. I studied at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and also in New York City while working for the Metropolitan Opera Guild. Eventually, I earned my masters in vocal performance at the University of Texas at Austin the same year I turned 30.
Around the time I finished my masters I had been married for 2 years and we were talking about starting a family. As much as it pained me at the time, I decided to let go of this pursuit and instead work on developing a career where I could better support my family.
I would eventually go on to become a pastor and a therapist but before this happened I had to get a job! And that job was being an office manager for FIVE years in downtown San Francisco.
Really, is this my life?!
As an office manager, I really struggled with my identity and meaning or purpose for my life. After I left that job I went on to work full time in a church and the following Youtube was created to illustrate a sermon reflecting back on my life (humorously) as an office manager when I felt really STUCK and dreamed at my desk about what my life could have been like if I had continued to pursue theater.
Do you feel stuck?
That word “stuck” comes up a lot in my counseling practice. It is so easy to get into a place where we feel unable to move forward or to get out of a rut. If you are feeling like that, I want to encourage you to choose another road.
Then MOVE forward…
If you feel stuck in your life, then find a good therapist, coach, pastor, or friend to listen to where you are at and encourage and help you to MOVE forward with your dreams. I’d love to be that therapist for you. Click below for a free 15 Minute Phone Consultation to determine if counseling is the right path for you.
And by the way, even though it was super difficult to not pursue my dream at the time to become a professional opera singer, I was able to pursue an even bigger dream of being a person who can help other people achieve their dreams. So I went after a career as a people helper and since I decided to pursue this passion I have been able to help people all over the world achieve their dreams. I could not be more thankful for the opportunities I have had to speak into the lives of others.
