Trauma and Attachment Informed EMDR Therapy

New Roads Counseling - Marty Schwebel, LMFT

Providing psychotherapy for those who are overwhelmed with life

It’s Not About the Nail!

September 9, 2019 by Marty

My last post was about an irritating little nail in my shoe and how it was a symbol of pain that, with a bit more self awareness, I could have taken care of easily. If you have not read that blog please click here to read it.

Sometimes, we just really want another person to hear about our pain and acknowledge how hard it is for us. But so often, we share our pain and others naturally want to FIX it! How many times have you shared about a particular difficult situation in your life to a friend and they immediately went into repair mode telling you exactly what you should do to get rid of the pain?

The following video is one I have used countless times in couples therapy as well as in a marriage/relationship workshop I have done in the past. I think you will enjoy it and will maybe see another way to respond to the person who comes to you to complain about an issue in their life that may seem obvious to you but is not apparent to them.
