As we approach Independence Day, I have been reflecting on how much I love this country, what it was founded upon, and what it stands for today. I know there are plenty of problems we have, but there are so many positives I would rather focus on.
What is freedom, really?
I believe in the freedom we have in this country. Freedom of speech, freedom to practice whatever religion we prefer, etc. But what I really stand for is the hope that we all can attain freedom in our soul (our mind, will, and emotions). My therapy practice is all about helping people achieve freedom in their lives on a daily basis.
There are things I like and dislike about our country but mostly I’m grateful for the freedom that we have to become who we want to become. I spent 5 years in Africa where it is a struggle for most people to simply make ends meet on a daily basis. Yet, while the people have nothing according to our high material standards, often they still have a sense of peace and an ability to be in the present that we struggle to obtain in this country.
This is the day
For me, true freedom is when we can be present and enjoy the moment we are in. One psalm that I love says, “This is the day the Lord has made, we will be glad and rejoice in it.” I try to follow this sentiment as much as possible and enjoy life even when there are difficult parts. I hope you can strive for the same.
So let freedom ring in your soul today and have a safe and happy 4th of July.
